Phrasal verbs are an integral part of everyday communication in English. They are commonly used in spoken and written English, and understanding them will help you to express yourself more effectively.


Here are some common phrasal verbs that you should know:


Look up – to search for information in a reference book or online

Example: I need to look up the definition of that word.


Turn off – to stop the operation of a machine or device

Example: Don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave the room.


Put off – to postpone or delay something

Example: I’ll have to put off our meeting until next week.


Take off – to remove clothing or to leave a place quickly

Example: I need to take off my jacket before we start the meeting.


Bring up – to mention or introduce a topic in conversation

Example: I’d like to bring up a new idea for our project.


Get over – to recover from something or to overcome a problem or difficulty

Example: It took me a long time to get over the flu.


Look forward to – to anticipate something with pleasure or excitement

Example: I’m really looking forward to the concert tonight.


Come up with – to think of an idea or a solution to a problem

Example: We need to come up with a plan for the new project.


Make up – to invent or create a story or excuse

Example: She made up a story to explain why she was late.


Break down – to stop working properly or to fail

Example: My car broke down on the way to work this morning.
