Tea has evolved as a colloquial term in modern language, often used within social circles to denote the sharing or receiving of interesting or juicy information. It's become a trendy way to describe engaging in or divulging gossip among friends or acquaintances. If someone “spills the tea” that means they are spreading gossip. If someone “sips the tea” that means they are listening to gossip.  

Examples: 

1. What are you doing? - Not much, just sipping the tea. 
2. I have something to tell you about Kelly. - OMG, spill the tea!
3. She's always spilling the tea about everyone's personal lives. - Yeah, she loves to gossip and sip the tea, doesn't she?
