Definition of upgrade


         1. raise (something) to a higher standard, in particular improve (equipment or machinery) by adding or replacing components. 

            The office is upgrading the telephone system

         2. raise (an employee) to a higher grade or rank.


3. an incline going up in the direction of movement.
4. an increase or improvement:
an upgrade in the year's profit forecast. 
5. a new version, improved model, etc.:
The company is offering an upgrade of its sports sedan.
6. an increase or improvement in one's service, accommodations, privileges, or the like:
If the ship isn't full we'll receive an upgrade to a deluxe stateroom.
7. something, as a piece of equipment, that serves to improve or enhance:
a full range of upgrades available for your computer. 


        8. an incline going up in the direction of movement.

         An example of upgrade used as an adjective is in the phrase "upgrade drive," which means an uphill drive.


         9. up a slope

         An example of upgrade used as an adverb is in the phrase "upgrade running," which means a running up a hill.
